“It’s great to see students honored because they’re so passionate and they’re so invigorated by the whole process,” said Content Producer at TUTV and Adjunct Professor Ed Dress.
Each spring, the advisors of the various TUTV shows like Dress and TUTV General Manager and Associate Professor of Practice Paul Gluck talk with their students to decide what work to submit to be considered for a NATAS Student Production Award. The submissions reflect what the students are most proud of from the previous year of producing their show.
“Each of the shows bring sort of a unique perspective on the content,” Gluck said. “The Academy has recognized two of our longest tenured shows, Temple Update and Temple Smash; and Feel Good Cooking has only been with us for about a year now.”
TUTV is proud to have upwards of 60 students, faculty and staff listed on the nominations. Two students, Luke Meli (he/him) and Haya Qubbaj (she/her), were nominated for their individual talent when on camera for Inside the Nest and Temple Update, respectively.
Both Meli and Qubbaj are senior media studies and production students, and said that earning this nomination was totally unexpected. Each had to submit a reel of some of their work, with Qubbaj putting hers together with only one day’s notice.
“Our students work so hard, and these nominations are judged by industry professionals who are telling students how good they are with their work,” wrote OwlSports Update Supervisor and Associate Professor of Practice Matt Fine.
Meli enjoyed creating his reel, saying it was cool to look at all his footage and how much progress he has made as a reporter in his time at TUTV. He noted that two things he thinks of when he thinks of his time at TUTV are the people and the professionalism. He is grateful to the talented individuals that came before him and hopes to pay it forward to the future talents at TUTV.
“To be at a point now where we’re being recognized for the work that we put in over the past several years, it just feels really rewarding,” Qubbaj said. She is proud of everyone at TUTV for being so resilient in all their work. Qubbaj’s nomination is especially historic for Temple Update as she is the first person from the show to be nominated in the talent category.
Temple Update Supervisor and Associate Professor of Practice Peter Jaroff is looking forward to celebrating all his students’ hard work at the Mid-Atlantic Student Production Awards ceremony on October 1, 2022. “Many have already graduated and are now working in cities across the country – but are planning to be back for the awards ceremony,” Jaroff wrote.
None of these nominations would have been achievable if not for the dedication of all parts of the Klein College of Media and Communication community.
“I am so proud of our students, faculty & staff members who made this possible. We have a wonderful family-type environment here at Klein College,” said Director of Multimedia Content and Adjunct Professor Neil Ortiz.
