Kayla Frazer came to Temple University in the fall of 2021 as a business management major, but she spent her first two years disinterested in what her major offered. Frazer was unsure about her career goals and could not find an outlet that piqued her interest.
During this time, she built a video channel documenting her life, social events and sharing stories with her subscribers. When she began considering a new major, Frazer wanted to find a field similar to what she had already been doing online.
At the end of her sophomore year, Frazer made the switch to media studies and production at Klein College of Media and Communication.
“I have just really fallen in love with media, arts graphic design," said Frazer. “That’s why I love Klein. Yes, it’s school, but I’m having fun and that’s something I was not doing as a business major.”
For her first year at Klein College, she took advantage of every opportunity and wants to make herself known as she enters her last year.
When trying to get her foot in the door at Klein, Frazer learned about an opportunity to work as a content creator for the college. She applied and got to work immediately, creating engaging content as a student creator.
Through this opportunity, Frazer has developed skills relating to social media content and familiarized herself with editing platforms.
“We’re incredibly proud of Kayla’s journey and her contributions to Klein,” said Amanda Stankiewicz, Klein College’s director of marketing and communications. “Her passion for media and dedication to content creation not only showcase her talent but also inspire her peers. Kayla embodies the spirit of innovation and creativity we strive to foster in our students.”
Frazer attends Klein-related events and activities and creates vlog-style videos that are then uploaded to the Klein College social media pages. As a result, she has met and interacted with many celebrities, like Quinta Brunson, at the 2024 Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards.
Another way Frazer immersed herself in the world of media and communication was by starting a show for Temple’s student-run internet radio station, WHIP Radio. “You’re Not Alone” speaks on tough topics related to relationships and has new guests every week.
Frazer and her co-host, Brielle Batchelor, were already familiarized through mutual classes and interactions on social media. When they saw each other at the WHIP Radio interest meeting, they decided to create their own show.
“From the moment I met her, she has been driven in any aspect of life and been excited to content creation,” said Batchelor. “It never seemed like a job for her; she always goes above and beyond in her content creation, and it shows in her work.”
This summer, Frazer is an intern for Immortal Vision Studio. In this position, she helps develop the creative process of their photo studio and maintenance of equipment.
She is also a marketing intern for HiTouch Enterprises, where she has worked since the beginning of 2022. Frazer assists in creating graphics and managing social media for businesses in the Philadelphia region. This recently led her to meet President Joe Biden at an African American Chamber of Conference event.
As Frazer enters her last year, she has much to look forward to—internships, commencement and post-graduation opportunities. Heading into the future, Frazer wants to continue creating content, whether it is for herself or contracted work. She hopes to find flexibility in a job that allows her to have fun and is willing to put in the work.
Through Klein, Frazer has accomplished above and beyond and hopes to continue to prove herself in the media field.
“I think people think content creation isn't a real job, but a lot of work really goes into it. A lot of work goes into thinking about videos and executing it to how you really want it to come out,” said Frazer. “I think it’s super important that there is a community around you that understands the creative struggle, and it becomes a safe space to work.”
