“Once I got to Temple freshman year, I went into the TV studio and basically was just like ‘what can I do?’” said Carly Mascitti, KLN ‘16.
Mascitti’s continuous involvement with Temple University Television (TUTV) and Temple’s radio station, WHIP, throughout her time at Klein prepared her for current job as sports anchor and reporter for NBC’s Rochester affiliate, WHEC-TV.
Mascitti got an early start into the workforce and showbusiness when she got a job working in the casting department of musical competition show The Voice the summer before her senior year of college. By the end of her senior year, Mascitti was offered a chance to work in the contestant department. This required her to move out to Los Angeles, which she was able to do through Temple’s study away program.
While in Los Angeles, Mascitti applied for on-air jobs with a particular interest in sports reporting, and eventually moved to Panama City Beach, Florida to work for the ABC affiliate there, WMBB News 13. Mascitti was with WMBB from January 2017 to March 2019, where she had roles including but not limited to reporter, sports anchor and sports director that led her to cover high school and college sports in the area.
After taking a break to travel, Mascitti moved to Rochester where she has been a sports anchor and reporter since September 2019 at WHEC-TV. There, she is on the Buffalo Bills football beat. She loves that she sometimes gets to cover players at the professional level that she used to cover when they played at the college level when she worked with WMBB.
Mascitti is grateful that she was able to get high-profile experience so early on in her time at Temple. She noted that many of her colleagues and friends are always surprised by how much she was able to accomplish early in her college career.
Mascitti began her work within TUTV at Temple Update, but her passion for sports reporting drew her to OwlSports Update, where she was involved as an anchor and reporter until she graduated. .
Director of OwlSports Update Matt Fine got to know Mascitti well throughout her time at Temple. “She worked really hard; it was rare that there would be something big going on at Temple that she didn’t want to be covering,” he said.
In her time as a Temple student, Mascitti got to go to media days, away games and conference championships in her role as a sideline reporter for WHIP. She even got to see Temple’s football team win the 2016 American Athletic Conference Football Championship in Houston.
Managing Director of Student Media John DiCarlo often got to witness Mascitti’s work on the sideline and at press conferences as he covered the Owls for OwlScoop, a part of Yahoo Sports. “She’s a pro. She just asked great questions, was always prepared, always did a great job,” he said. “When she graduated, I knew she was going to get a job because I got to see her work firsthand.”
Mascitti said that her time with TUTV and WHIP was as close to real world experience as she could have gotten, and is grateful to DiCarlo and Fine as well as other industry professionals she met because of Temple. “One of the coolest things for me was that we have so many adjunct professors or professors who actually did what I was going to school for,” she said.
“I’m glad that her hard work has paid off, and I think she has a brilliant career ahead of her,” DiCarlo said.
