In what has become a tradition of excellence, Temple University and Klein College of Media and Communication student media has been recognized with five awards from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS), including the Best College/University Television Station award for TUTV and Best Website for WHIP Radio. This follows another winning year in 2021, during which TUTV brought home two awards and several nominations.
This year, Temple student media received the following IBS awards:
-
Best Website for WHIP Radio’s website
-
Best Use of Graphics for OwlSports Update’s Graphics Package for Inside the Nest 10/26
-
Best Sports Program for OwlSports Update’s Inside the Nest 9/28
-
Best Station Contest/Promotional Event for WHIP Radio’s Rocktober 2021 Promo
-
Best College/University Television Station for TUTV
-
Plus several other nominations.
TUTV Manager and Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Media Studies and Production Paul Gluck felt that while there is no question whether the students’ content is exceptional, the recognition is nice too.
“When I consider the incredibly talented Temple students who create exemplary content, each day, for TUTV, Owl Sports Update and WHIP Radio, it makes this accolade from IBS even more humbling and, in its way, very sweet,” he said.
For quite some time now, Temple student media has operated in a professional capacity as generators and disseminators of important and timely news for the Philadelphia community. For instance, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States in March 2020, student media outlets joined forces to create a comprehensive news system for information about the virus.
"Our students are often part of a 24-hour news cycle here and put so much time and effort into what they do, in addition to balancing out their classes, part-time jobs and other responsibilities,” said Managing Director of Student Media and Adjunct Journalism Instructor John DiCarlo. “To see them recognized by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System for their work on a national level confirms what we already know -- that they're as good as anyone in the country. I'm thrilled for them."
Of course, these awards also speak to the creative talents of Klein’s students in addition to their news, sports and entertainment sensibilities. Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Media Studies and Production for OwlSports Update Matt Fine feels the awards are a reflection of the work our students put in.
"It was such an exciting night for my students. To win not one, but two national awards says so much about the work they do,” he said. “And the two awards are a nice combination. Winning Best Sports [Program] shows the teamwork and winning Best Graphics Package shows the creativity."
