Plus-one Programs

+1 Programs

Joining a +1 program means taking graduate-level courses during your junior and/or senior year and earning a master’s degree in only one additional year of study. Current Klein College undergraduate students may apply to enroll in a +1 program in either journalism or media studies and production. Applications are accepted during the student’s junior year. You do not need to be enrolled in either the journalism or media studies and production undergraduate programs in order to apply to the Master of Journalism +1.

Master of Journalism +1

The Klein College of Media and Communication Master of Journalism +1 allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years.

Temple students in majors other than journalism can combine their academic interests with a multimedia, cross-platform graduate program in journalism that prepares them for a variety of career opportunities as designers, editors, reporters and writers as well as any number of other positions in digital and traditional media.

Admissions

Students with a minimum GPA of 3.25 after 45 credits of coursework at Temple University are eligible to participate in the program, which allows selected students to earn both degrees in five years of full-time study and one additional summer semesterlong course. The +1 program also fulfills Temple Honors program requirements.

Students should apply to the program during the spring of their junior year. Admitted students will take one Master of Journalism course during each semester of their senior year. After earning their bachelor’s degree, students will complete the degree in two semesters of full-time coursework and a summer capstone.

Graduation Requirements

Only grades of B- or better will count toward a Master of Journalism degree. Thirty semester hours of credit, continuous enrollment and an overall graduate GPA of a 3.0 (B) or better at graduation are also required.

Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production +1

The Klein College of Media and Communication +1 Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production program enables undergraduate students majoring in media studies and production or communication studies to pursue a Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production in only one additional year.

Students in Klein College’s Media Studies and Production MA program deepen their understanding of theory and method to inform production and research. They study cultural processes of media communication, media industries and technologies, and media networks and organizations. The program is creative and flexible, so students can choose courses that align with their professional and academic goals.

Admissions

Students with a minimum GPA of 3.25 after 45 credits of coursework are eligible to participate in the +1 program, which allows selected students to earn both degrees in five years of full-time study. This program also fulfills Temple Honors program requirements.

Students should apply to the program during the fall of their junior year. Admitted students will begin taking graduate courses in the second semester of their junior year. Graduate courses will also be taken during each semester of their senior year. They will complete the degree with one summer semester course after earning their bachelor’s degree, in two semesters of full-time coursework.
